This workshop is a preview of Haw River Assembly’s upcoming Climate Resiliency Curriculum\, offered to any UNCG students and employees interested in attending to learn resources and skills to take localized action. Students and faculty will be asked to provide feedback on the content and structure of the curriculum. \nAttendance both days is highly recommended. SUMMARY:Human-Fire Relationships: It's Complicated
DESCRIPTION:When most of us hear the word fire\, we immediately think about its destructive capacity. We think about videos on the news showing burning buildings\, and tickers tracking mounting death tolls. Fire can be terrifying. Yet\, fire can also restore\, promoting life and biodiversity. In this sustainability lecture\, Dr. Wilcox will begin by going through the history of our complicated relationship with fire\, focusing on important shifts in our use and perception of fire. Then\, he will focus on what scientific research tells us about fire effects on ecosystems\, and how it can be useful. He will share his thoughts about how we might move forward towards responsibly re-incorporating fire into natural landscapes. \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:The UNCG Sustainability Lecture and Dialogue Series returns with guest\, Dr. Kim Komatsu\, Associate Professor and Florence Schaeffer Distinguished Scholar of Science in the UNCG Department of Biology. \nDescription: Insects are everywhere\, in our home\, our yards\, and the ecosystems around us. They play vital roles in the environment\, including decomposition of waste\, control of plants\, and serving as food for other animals. Yet\, most species of insects are on the decline globally. In this lecture\, we will discuss how insects shape our environment for the good and bad\, our current understanding of why they are on the decline\, and what you can do to help. \nDr. Komatsu investigates how ecosystem responses to global change drivers are mediated by biotic processes.
