SUMMARY:Kiss The Ground Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Narrated and featuring Woody Harrelson\, Kiss the Ground is an inspiring and groundbreaking film that reveals the first viable solution to our climate crisis. Kiss the Ground reveals that\, by regenerating the world’s soils\, we can completely and rapidly stabilize Earth’s climate\, restore lost ecosystems and create abundant food supplies. Using compelling graphics and visuals\, along with striking NASA and NOAA footage\, the film artfully illustrates how\, by drawing down atmospheric carbon\, soil is the missing piece of the climate puzzle. No registration necessary. Just show up.

SUMMARY:Human-Fire Relationships: It's Complicated
DESCRIPTION:When most of us hear the word fire\, we immediately think about its destructive capacity. We think about videos on the news showing burning buildings\, and tickers tracking mounting death tolls. Fire can be terrifying. Yet\, fire can also restore\, promoting life and biodiversity. In this sustainability lecture\, Dr. Wilcox will begin by going through the history of our complicated relationship with fire\, focusing on important shifts in our use and perception of fire. Then\, he will focus on what scientific research tells us about fire effects on ecosystems\, and how it can be useful. He will share his thoughts about how we might move forward towards responsibly re-incorporating fire into natural landscapes. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Insects: Love 'em\, Hate 'em\, Gotta have 'em
DESCRIPTION:The UNCG Sustainability Lecture and Dialogue Series returns with guest\, Dr. Kim Komatsu\, Associate Professor and Florence Schaeffer Distinguished Scholar of Science in the UNCG Department of Biology. \nDescription: Insects are everywhere\, in our home\, our yards\, and the ecosystems around us. They play vital roles in the environment\, including decomposition of waste\, control of plants\, and serving as food for other animals. Yet\, most species of insects are on the decline globally. In this lecture\, we will discuss how insects shape our environment for the good and bad\, our current understanding of why they are on the decline\, and what you can do to help. \nDr. Komatsu investigates how ecosystem responses to global change drivers are mediated by biotic processes. Specifically\, she studies how ecosystem function is influenced by mutualisms\, competition\, consumers\, and alterations in abiotic resource availability. \nThe is virtual event is free and open to the public. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Pitch for The Planet: A UNCG Green Fund Venture
DESCRIPTION:It’s Shark Tank meets Ted Talk! \nStudent participants will have 5 minutes and 10 slides to pitch the UNCG Green Fund Committee and convince them to implement your sustainability initiative on campus. This is your chance to be the change you want to see! Two winners will be selected: one by the committee and one via an audience favorite. \nThe Green Fund operates as an on-campus grant program that invests in environmental projects to further UNCG’s sustainability mission. Participants should review the UNCG Green Fund webpage to familiarize themselves with the types of projects the committee has funded in the past. \nTo give some perspective of the size of the projects we can support\, participants should also keep in mind that the Green Fund operates with a $56\,000 annual budget and typically awards 10-12 projects a year for an average of $5\,000. However\, you do not have to include a budget in your pitch. We just want to hear your idea and be inspired by the potential impact it can have. \nWe highly encourage participants to schedule at least one consultation with the UNCG Communications Lab. Contact Gia Coturri Sorenson for support in the Lab: gmcoturr@uncg.edu \nQuestions about the event? Contact Sean MacInnes: s_macinn@uncg.edu \nGuidelines: Presenters will have 5 minutes and are allowed 10 slides. Projects may be for campus infrastructure that conserves resources\, sustainability education\, research\, or professional development that benefits students. \nWinners will work with the Office of Sustainability and the Green Fund committee to see their projects implemented in the spring. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Asheville Artists Benefit Exhibit @GPS
DESCRIPTION:Greensboro Project Space is pleased to announce a fundraising event in support of Western North Carolina (WNC) artists devastated by Hurricane Helene\, organized by Asheville-based artist Margee Halsch. \nThis exhibition will show works in a variety of mediums from nine WNC artists displaced by Hurricane Helene. The hurricane and flood waters from the French Broad River have decimated the historic River Arts District in Asheville\, leaving hundreds of artists without inventory\, studios\, and gallery spaces. \n“To be able to support our fellow Asheville art community in this way is reflective of what’s at the heart of GPS – supporting artists through community and humanity. It is with open doors and open arms that we welcome these Asheville-based artists. Our hope is to play just a small part in a much larger revitalization process by offering a platform for them to share their artistry during this time of recovery\,” says Greensboro Project Space Director\, Caitlyn Schrader. \nThis exhibition offers an additional opportunity for the Greensboro community to support the recovery of this group of artists\, both financially and emotionally. All artworks will be available for sale\, with 100% of proceeds going directly to the artists. Proceeds from a raffle at the closing reception will further support relief efforts in the Asheville River Arts District.

SUMMARY:Rachel Carson\, Politics\, & The Environment
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Carson ignited the modern environmental movement. She was a trained scientist and author who changed history with her book\, Silent Spring. And she was proudly politically active: Carson campaigned for John F. Kennedy and worked closely with his administration on speeches\, policy\, and legislation. \nCarson was a pioneering advocate concerned about global climate change\, toxic chemicals\, and environmental justice — critical issues for the election of 2024. The Rachel Carson Council continues to work on these issues today. \nIn addition to recounting Carson’s story\, Dr. Musil will urge students to engage in the 2024 election — one that will determine the fate of the environment and American democracy. \nBob Musil is President & CEO of the Rachel Carson Council. From 1992-2006\, he was the Executive Director & CEO of Physicians for Social Responsibility. He is a graduate of Johns Hopkins\, Northwestern\, and Yale universities. In addition to his role as a national advocate and leader\, Dr. Musil has published three books\, including Rachel Carson and Her Sisters(Rutgers 2014) and has worked in print and radio journalism. \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:UNCG Campus Nature Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The goal of the 2024 Fall Campus Nature Challenge at UNC Greensboro is to engage our campus community in a citizen science project to increase biodiversity awareness by photographing\, recording audio\, and cataloging the plants\, animals (including insects)\, and fungi during a week-long “bioblitz” on campus. The event will take place from September 30 – October 6. \n\n\n\nUNCG students and employees are asked to use the iNaturalist app to identify as many species across campus as they can. Student participants will be awarded prizes for the most observations identified and best photos. \n\n\n\nThis project builds off of the work of the UNCG Biology Department\, which runs and monitors two wetlands on campus on iNaturalist. During the last two nature challenges over 100 participants combined to make 2\,300 observations and identified 600 species. \nDownload the iNaturalist App and join the UNC Greensboro Bioblitz 2024 project. \nContact Dr. Kevin Wilcox with questions: k_wilcox@uncg.edu
