Human-Fire Relationships: It’s Complicated

April 7, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

When most of us hear the word fire, we immediately think about its destructive capacity. We think about videos on the news showing burning buildings, and tickers tracking mounting death tolls. Fire can be terrifying. Yet, fire can also restore, promoting life and biodiversity. In this sustainability lecture, Dr. Wilcox will begin by going through the history of our complicated relationship with fire, focusing on important shifts in our use and perception of fire. Then, he will focus on what scientific research tells us about fire effects on ecosystems, and how it can be useful. He will share his thoughts about how we might move forward towards responsibly re-incorporating fire into natural landscapes.
