Rachel Carson, Politics, & The Environment
Rachel Carson ignited the modern environmental movement. She was a trained scientist and author who changed history with her book, Silent Spring. And she was proudly politically active: Carson campaigned for John F. Kennedy and worked closely with his administration on speeches, policy, and legislation.
Carson was a pioneering advocate concerned about global climate change, toxic chemicals, and environmental justice — critical issues for the election of 2024. The Rachel Carson Council continues to work on these issues today.
In addition to recounting Carson’s story, Dr. Musil will urge students to engage in the 2024 election — one that will determine the fate of the environment and American democracy.
Bob Musil is President & CEO of the Rachel Carson Council. From 1992-2006, he was the Executive Director & CEO of Physicians for Social Responsibility. He is a graduate of Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, and Yale universities. In addition to his role as a national advocate and leader, Dr. Musil has published three books, including Rachel Carson and Her Sisters(Rutgers 2014) and has worked in print and radio journalism.
